Injustice! awful injustice!
So on one of my yahoo groups there's some drama because someone made a site that's supposed to be inclusive but completely disallowed the inclusion of slash. So one person said, "hey, I think that's wrong of you to do considering we're supposed to be united here. You should include slash." <--that's a paraphrase but she never called the first woman a hater of gay people, just homophobic.

And so the person who spoke up made a completely all inclusive site that allows slash. High road, right? She didn't ask her to change her site, she did NOT "drag her name through the mud" as the woman complained.

Now on the original website there is a loooooooooong “I AM NOT HOMOPHOBIC… I’M JUST CHRISTIAN AND SCARED OF GAY PEOPLE.” welcome message. That whole thing is really insulting. And it also drives me up the wall because she didn’t say that she hated gay people. Homophobia does not inherantly imply hatred. I think she needs a dictionary. The whole thing is really an insult to tolerance even though she’s accusing anyone who is offended by her exclusion of slash of intolerance. She is so mad. It’s kind of funny in a totally awful way.

She said, and I quote: “I'm sick and tired of hearing people talk about love and tolerance, and yet failing to practice those two things when it comes to people who have different beliefs than they do!” we’re supposed to be like, “oh, you think I’m going to hell, but that’s okay.” Who says people have to tolerate and love intolerance? She has completely martyred herself. “No one deserves to be treated this way.” She needs to climb down off her cross.

It’s totally laughable and oh-so-completely-intolerant-Christian. Because you know, straight white Christians are really persecuted in this country... we should all cut her some slack and love her for her exclusive, stifled, misguided "moral" view of people who are different than her.

To me the issue would be no different if she disallowed someone of a different religion onto her website. It is totally not alright to start a WIKI, something that public, in a FANDOM and invite people to join but exclude probably a quarter of the people.

Another quote I found particularly offensive was... oh that's funny. I went back to get the quote and she'd changed the disclaimer... The quote was like "we're supposedly living in a progressive society but I'm being persecuted for this?" and also there was a quote from one of her friends like, "I'm fine with gay people having a relationship but that doesn't mean I have to acknowledge it." oh blah blah blah.

It's people like her who are the reason why there's still only partial equality. Because they can't look past their own bigoted beliefs to realize that gay people should have all the same rights and privileges as they do.

To quote Olauduah Equiano, "oh ye nominal Christians" People who claim to have moral values are usual moral in name only. And also another fitting quote, William Apess (a native American before the Cherokee Removal) ""while these very same unfeeling, self-esteemed characters pretend to take the skin as a pretext to keep us from our unalienable and lawful rights? I would ask you if you would like to be disenfranchised from all your rights, merely because your skin is white, and for no other crime. I'll venture to say, these characters who hold the skin to be such a barrier in the way would be the first to cry out, "Injustice! awful Injustice!"

The argument is the same. Discrimination is wrong. Be it based on religion, skin color, gender, sexuality, age it is always wrong.

And I am under no obligation to tolerate or love people who don't think that everyone is entitled to the same privileges for any reason.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm really pissed off at that person right now.

What a douchebag. She deserves every complaint she gets. Please, after all of the things society has had to evolve through, she's still pulling the religion card? That's just ridiculous.

Yowza. What... a complete and total coward. She wants to hold an unpopular viewpoint without actually having to be unpopular, and, to quote my best friend Jacque, "that shit don't fly." She would have been a lot more credible if she'd just stood by her convictions and cited her supporting evidence without apology.

She would have been a lot more Christian about it if she'd specified she hated the sin, not the sinner. After all, in the Bible homosexuality is treated no differently than extramarital sex. I wonder if her archive was extramarital-sex free, too? Does she shun the company of all those who have sex outside the bounds of lawful marraige, too? Is she "scared" of them? No? Then sorry, hon, you're just using the Bible as a cheap excuse for being a jackass. (Feel free to borrow this point if you still want to argue with her about being a homophobe.)

Alternatively, the twit could have shown a half-ounce of consideration for others' feelings and bypassed the whole issue by just making the archive limited-demographic from the beginning. All she had to say was that she was a hetter who felt she was drowning in slash and therefore wanted to create an archive where hetters could find het fic and gen fic without having to wade through a bunch of slash to get there (kinda like the McShep-free SGA archives or the GSR-free CSI archives out there). That way the archive would be like keeping Romance in a separate shelving unit from Science Fiction in the library: congretating genres, not a moral-political judgment.

Anyway. What a tactless, spineless little drama queen. I'm sorry you had to deal with her.

Actually she does say that she greatly disapproves of extramarital sex too, but I think the whole thing is just really ridiculous. Her archive is like sex free. It's really kind of surreal, you know? I mean, fandom without sex? But whatever. I think my main problem is how much she flew off the handle because the person who wrote her the first message was VERY civil and the fact that she blew it so far out of the water to go as far as to accuse the rest of us of calling her a hater, dragging her name through the mud and calling US intolerant and stuff? That was just really really insulting. And even if it is just her religious beliefs, whether my opinion is a popular one or not, I think it's a poor excuse. As my friend was saying yesterday, religions that try to prevent premarital sex is really just a way of "preserving" the women because they're supposed to be only for their husbands and it's really just a way for religions to keep women "in their place" and stuff like that. One of my friends who is very much involved in her church is so progressive about her beliefs but still manages to be involved with her religion and I just feel like being a good Christian doesn't rely on not having sex before marriage, I just personally feel like I don't trust anything that doesn't change and evolve with time. In fact I think the basic problem with society is that people have stopped evolving and we're now having smart women with careers who don't have children until later if at all, and then there are underprivileged, undereducated people who have a lot of children and what it's really serving to do is bring down the national average and increasing the gap between classes. People who never ever once waiver on their beliefs? Those people are SCARY. People who use religion to back up their arguments? Doubly so. Because I'm not religious I always kind of worry about people who are because I had a friend who was religious and even when we were friends was always like, "well, according to my religion you're going to hell." and I'm like, "...yay?" I mean, that's where all the cool people are going to be, so whatever. But that was really horrible to hear all the time. But my friend who has progressive beliefs, fully acknowledges that the bible was written by people and is meant to be an allegory, which I think is just the best way to think about the bible. And her religious convictions rest within things like "my body, my temple," God wants me to be a good person, sort of things which, to me, is the best way to be religious. But whatever, I was just really mad that a straight white Christian had the nerve to accuse US of persecuting her. Like you said she wants to express unpopular beliefs and expect not to get called on them? Yeah fing right.

♥ I love your Hotch icon, by the way! I bought season 2 a while ago and I've been watching it but I want to get season 1.

what a bigoted idiot. she's probably all scared of gays because some lesbian was desperate enough to try to pick the silly little twerp up. and remember, folks, it's only premarital sex if you get married afterwards!
